FAQ

  • How did the Mobility Alliance come about?

We started as a few frustrated citizens who found ourselves fed up with the suburban sprawl and car-dependent infrastructure in Sarasota County. We realized that there was no sense complaining if we weren't going to take action to make things better!

  • What are some specific projects that the Mobility Alliance supports?

There are countless projects that we would like to see undergone in Sarasota. Examples are Bus Rapid Transit along US 41, a north/south protected bicycle route along the Shade/Riverwood Ave Corridor from Downtown to Gulf Gate, and a rezoning of South Tamiami Trail (similar to what can be found between on North Tamiami from Downtown to University Parkway).

  • What are some projects that the Mobility Alliance is in opposition to?

One project that we are opposed to is the new Diverging Diamond Interchange between State Road 72 and I-75. This unnecessary boondoggle will cost $57 Million dollars once completed - Thats enough to run Breeze Transit for over two years! Other projects that we oppose include many roadway projects in the eastern portion of the county, which encourage suburban sprawl and use up funds that could be better spent within already developed parts of Sarasota.

  • Is Sarasota Mobility Alliance associated with Strong Towns?

Yes! We are the registered Strong Towns chapter for Sarasota County, and we are firm believers in the Strong Towns Approach - that the most successful cities are built from the ground up by citizen involvement.

  • Which public forums do Mobility Alliance members attend?

We advocate for our vision through engagement with Sarasota County, the City of Sarasota, the Sarasota/Manatee MPO, the Florida Department of Transportation, and Breeze Transit. This includes collaboration with relevant officials, attendance at Citizens Advisory Committee forums, and participation in community events, from bike rides to planning workshops.

  • Is the Sarasota Mobility Alliance a registered nonprofit?

As of yet, we are not registered as a 501(c)(3) or 501(c)(4) nonprofit. We do not currently accept donations, and we encourage that supporters of our vision for Sarasota donate their time and energy, rather than any material resources.
